The experimental irradiation platform of Aérial, Féerix®, was inaugurated on 10 September 2019 with Jean-Luc MARX, Prefect of Grand Est Region, Lilla MERABET, Vice-president of Grand Est Regional Council in charge of competitiveness, innovation and digital, Robert HERRMANN, President of Strasbourg Eurométropole, Claude FROEHLY, Mayor of Illkirch-Graffenstaden, Thomas SERVAIS, President of IBA Industrial, and Alain STRASSER, Director of Aerial.
This platform, unique in the world, is based on advanced electron acceleration and high energy X-ray generation technologies.
From research to industrial applications
Installed in an extension of the 800 m² Aérial building, the Rhodotron®, which weighs nearly 11 tons comes from a technology developed by the CEA and industrialised by the Belgian company IBA, partner of the project. This tool, intended for research, development and training, has characteristics very similar to those of industrial equipment, which makes it possible to transfer the results to industry in an optimal way. The Rhodotron® allows the study of all multisectoral applications of ionization, such as sterilization of medical devices, in an original configuration with two separate beam lines (electrons and X-rays), improving the properties of polymers or ionizing food.
Strengthening cross-border and international development
In April 2019, Aérial was able to present Féerix® to an international community of scientists and industrialists at the Palais de la Musique et des Congrès in Strasbourg, and thus initiated the first partnership agreements and research contracts. With this tool, Aerial further strengthens its role as a key partner for major regional, national and international projects. The operation also strengthens cross-border partnerships with Swiss and German companies and laboratories. With feerix® and all of its laboratories, Aerial is a real technological nugget that positions itself as a privileged partner of the structures and companies of the Nextmed Medical Technologies Campus and the entire regional ecosystem in materials and bio-economy field.
The feerix® operation represents an investment of around 10 million euros, financed by the European Regional Development Funds, the State, Grand Est Region, Eurométropole of Strasbourg and the Belgian industrialist IBA.
